What makes a good Scrabble word?
High-scoring Scrabble words usually combine one or more of these factors:
- High-value letters: Q (10pts), Z (10pts), J (8pts), X (8pts), K (5pts)
- Word length: 7-letter words earn a 50-point "bingo" bonus
- Premium squares: Landing on Double/Triple Word Score squares multiplies everything
- Hooks: Words that can have a letter added to the front or back (turning RAIN → TRAIN → TRAINS)
Essential two-letter words every Scrabble player should know
Two-letter words are the foundation of advanced Scrabble play. They let you make parallel plays, create multiple words at once, and dump high-value tiles in tight spots.
Valid in the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary (OSPD5) and TWL06. Some may differ in SOWPODS (international).
High-value words with Q (no U needed)
The Q tile is worth 10 points but almost always needs a U — except for these valid words:
- QI (2 letters) — the vital force in Chinese philosophy (10pts)
- QOPH (4 letters) — 19th letter of the Hebrew alphabet
- QANAT (5 letters) — ancient irrigation tunnel system
- QIGONG (6 letters) — Chinese exercise system
- QINTAR (6 letters) — Albanian monetary unit
High-value words with Z
- ZA — slang for pizza (2 letters, 11pts)
- ZAX — a tool for cutting roofing slates (3 letters, 19pts)
- ZEP — a large sandwich (3 letters, 14pts)
- ZOEAE — larval form of crustaceans (5 letters)
- ZYMURGY — the chemistry of fermentation (7 letters)
Words With Friends vs. Scrabble: key differences
Both games accept most of the same words. WordCoach uses the ENABLE word list, which covers the vast majority of valid plays in both games.
Strategy tips for beginners
- Don't save your S tiles. Beginners hoard S for big plays; experts use them regularly for +20–30 points by pluralizing existing words.
- Keep your rack balanced. Aim for 2–3 vowels and 4–5 consonants. A balanced rack gives you more options.
- Know when to exchange tiles. If you have UUIIOO on your rack, it's often better to exchange 4–5 tiles and forfeit a turn than to play a 5-point word.
- Learn the two-letter words. The grid above is worth memorizing — these words open up plays your opponent won't see coming.
- Block, don't just score. Sometimes the best move prevents your opponent from landing on a Triple Word Score next turn.
